Granite City Speedway 2013 Season Schedule and Highlights

The second season of operation for the new Granite City Speedway in Sauk Rapids, MN is quickly approaching and fans will once again be treated to a season full of ground pounding racing action from late April through late September.

The season will kick off with an Open Practice session for any and all competitors to come out and shake down their cars on Sunday, April 28th from 5p-9p. Pit passes will be $30 for each driver and $10 for anyone else wishing to enter the pit area. The grandstand area will be open for spectators free of charge.

The season will then kick off with Opening Day 2013 on Sunday, May 5th and will feature WISSOTA Modifieds, Super Stocks, Midwest Modifieds, Street Stocks, Mod Fours, Pure Stocks and Hornets on the weekly schedule. Racing will begin at 5:30pm. Gates will open at 3pm.

Racing will take place on Mother’s Day with our annual Mother’s Day Special, which is Sunday, May 12th and along with our regular seven divisions, we will have a special treat for the mothers in attendance.

A Regular Racing Program will occur on Sunday, May 19th.

The final event of the month of May will be our Memorial Day Special on Monday, May 27th and will feature our regular 5 WISSOTA divisions along with the Hornets and the first appearance of the Hobby Stocks.

June is a month that fans will want to not miss a minute of the action as there will be five jam packed events including our first Kids Night of the season on Sunday, June 2nd featuring our regular seven classes in action plus a ton of fun things planned for the kids.

June 9th will be our AMSOIL Race of Champions Qualifier Night for all of the WISSOTA divisions to see who represents Granite City in the Race of Champions at the WISSOTA 100 in September.

One of the most anticipated nights of the year will occur on Sunday, June 16th as the mighty WISSOTA Late Models will return to St Cloud for the first time in 31 years as part of our Father’s Day Late Model Special. The Late Models will be sure to provide a high powered program at GCS like never before. Along with the Late Models, Midwest Modifieds, Street Stocks and Mod Fours will be racing plus the Hobby Stocks will be on the schedule for their second appearance of the season as well.

Sunday, June 23rd will feature a regular racing night and then our second annual Mystery Payout Night will happen on Sunday, June 30th. This is the night where whichever WISSOTA division has the highest car count will race for our nightly Modified payoff.

We will then take the Fourth of July holiday weekend off, so there are no races on Sunday, July 7th but we will be back in action on Sunday, July 14th for our Meet the Drivers Night, where fans will get the opportunity to meet and greet with all the drivers on the track at intermission. Kids will be in for a treat as many of the drivers will have fun things to give to the kids as well.

Sunday, July 21st will see the return of the UMSS Wingless Sprint Cars along with our five WISSOTA divisions and the third visit by the Hobby Stocks.

Another highly anticipated night of action will take place on Sunday, July 28th when the Minnesota Corn Growers present Jam the Stands Night, where fans will get into the grandstand area absolutely free. We will feature all 5 WISSOTA divisions along with the Pure Stocks and Hornets and again, fans will pay absolutely nothing to get into the grandstands to see all the great racing action.

Four events during the month of August will be great as well with Sunday, August 4th being a Regular Race Night along with powder puff races for the ladies as well.

The following Sunday will be our wildly popular Bike Giveaway Night on Sunday, August 11th, where kids will have the chance to take home one of many free bikes at intermission.

Sunday, August 18th will see the return of the United States Modified Touring Series for the second year in a row as the road warriors will compete in their $3,000 to win Hunt Race. The Hobby Stocks will compete for the fourth time this season at GCS this night as well. This was one of the most talked about events on last year’s schedule and should be outstanding again in 2013.

The final Sunday of the month of August - August 25th - will feature our Track Championship Night where the 2013 GCS track champions will be crowned and will also feature pitmen races after the program is over.

Monday, September 2nd will see the return of the UMSS Winged Sprint Cars to Granite City. After last year’s excellent show, fans will not want to miss out on this Labor Day Sprint Car show. Hobby Stocks will be in action for the fifth time at GCS as well.

The season will wrap up with the second annual Granite City Gold Cup Tripleheader on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, September 27th, 28th and 29th. This event will feature three complete shows for our 5 WISSOTA divisions plus each of our non-WISSOTA classes will compete one night (Hobby Stocks on Friday; Pure Stocks on Saturday and Hornets on Sunday) and fans will be treated to the Northern Vintage Stock Cars, who will be in action all three days as well.

Fans will see a few changes as we enter 2013 as well. Pits and Grandstand gates will open at 3pm (an hour later than 2012) and racing will begin at 5:30pm (30 minutes later than 2012) all season long. Start times for the Gold Cup will be announced at a later date.

Prices have also changed slightly going into 2013 as we have added a military discount for active military members, as well as we have lowered our grandstand admission price for children 7-17 years old from $6 to $5 for this season. Fans will also notice that children 6 and under are always free at Granite City. New this year will also be a children’s pit pass for children ages 7-17, which will be half of the $30 driver and crew pit pass as long as they are accompanied by an adult. Children 6 and under will be admitted free into the pit area this year as well provided they have a signed parental waiver on file and are accompanied by a parent.
